Cat6 vs Cat6A: Which Ethernet Cable Should You Install?

For a new structured-cabling installation, one of the most common questions is whether to install Cat6 or step up to Cat6A. Both can deliver excellent performance, but the correct choice depends on link length, network speed, PoE requirements, pathway space, installation labor, and budget.

When Cat6 makes sense

Cat6 Ethernet cable is an excellent choice for general office networks, cameras, access-control systems, wireless access points, VoIP phones, building automation, and other Gigabit applications. It is widely available, easier to route than many Cat6A designs, and usually offers a lower installed cost.

Cat6 can also support 10GBASE-T over shorter links, but installers should not design a building around the assumption that every Cat6 run will provide 10 Gigabit performance at the full 100-meter channel distance.

When Cat6A is worth the upgrade

Cat6A is the more appropriate choice when the project requires full-distance 10 Gigabit Ethernet, additional crosstalk margin, or greater performance headroom for a long service life.

Common Cat6A applications include high-performance offices, data-heavy workstations, Wi-Fi infrastructure, AV-over-IP, engineering environments, and projects where recabling later would be especially expensive.

What about PoE?

Both Cat6 and Cat6A are commonly used with Power over Ethernet. Actual thermal performance depends on conductor gauge, conductor material, cable construction, bundle size, ambient temperature, pathway conditions, and the PoE power level. For high-power PoE deployments, installers should choose properly rated pure-copper cable and evaluate bundle heating rather than selecting solely by category name.

Installation considerations

Cat6A often has a larger outside diameter and bend radius. That affects conduit fill, J-hooks, cable tray loading, patch-panel density, termination time, and the number of cables that can be routed through an existing pathway.

On retrofit work, Cat6 may be easier to install. On new construction with generous pathways, the added size of Cat6A is usually easier to accommodate.

Which should you buy?

  • Choose Cat6 when the network is primarily Gigabit, the project is cost-sensitive, and full-distance 10 Gigabit is not a requirement.
  • Choose Cat6A when 10 Gigabit at full channel distance, added performance margin, or long-term infrastructure life is a project priority.
  • Choose shielded cable only when the environment or design justifies it and the grounding/bonding strategy is properly planned.
