What is CMR riser cable?

CMR stands for Communications Riser. Riser-rated Ethernet cable is intended for vertical runs between floors and for many general in-wall commercial applications where plenum-rated cable is not required.

Typical examples include cable routed through walls, telecommunications rooms, shafts, and non-plenum pathways. Always confirm the actual installation environment and local code before specifying the cable.

What is CMP plenum cable?

CMP stands for Communications Plenum. Plenum-rated cable uses a jacket designed for installations in spaces used for environmental air handling, where stricter flame-spread and smoke requirements apply.

A common example is the open space above a suspended ceiling when that space is part of the building's return-air system. Not every drop ceiling is automatically a plenum, so installers should verify the mechanical design rather than assuming.

CMR and CMP describe the jacket fire rating; Cat5e, Cat6, and Cat6A describe the cable's transmission category. A project can therefore call for Cat6 CMR, Cat6 CMP, Cat6A CMR, or Cat6A CMP depending on both performance and installation environment.

For most new commercial structured-cabling projects, Cat6 cable remains a practical baseline. Projects requiring additional 10-Gigabit headroom may justify Cat6A cable.
