Ethernet cable can use either solid or stranded copper conductors. The two constructions may look similar from the outside, but they are optimized for different jobs.
Using the correct conductor type improves reliability, makes termination easier, and reduces the chance of intermittent connections later.
What is solid Ethernet cable?
Each conductor in solid cable is a single piece of copper. Solid cable is generally preferred for permanent horizontal structured-cabling runs because it maintains its shape, performs well over distance, and terminates cleanly into compatible 110-style IDC connections.

What is stranded Ethernet cable?
Each conductor in stranded cable is made from multiple fine strands of copper. That makes the cable more flexible and better able to tolerate repeated movement.
Typical uses include:
- Patch cords
- Equipment racks
- Workstation jumpers
- Temporary installations
- Applications where the cable is frequently moved or bent

The connector must match the conductor
This is where many field problems begin. RJ45 plugs and keystone contacts are not all designed for both conductor constructions. A plug intended only for stranded cable can make unreliable contact on solid conductors, and vice versa.
Always verify that the connector is rated for the conductor type and wire gauge being installed. The same applies to shielded versus unshielded terminations.
Should permanent cable be turned into patch cords?
It is possible to terminate some solid bulk cable directly with compatible modular plugs, but for most structured-cabling systems the cleaner design is permanent solid cable terminated at jacks or patch panels, followed by factory-made or properly terminated stranded patch cords at each end.
This architecture keeps the permanent link stable while putting repeated flexing on inexpensive, replaceable patch cords.
